UCSB considers you a transfer applicant if you graduated from a high school or secondary school and subsequently
enrolled in a regular session at a college or university. You may not disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.

International applicants must meet the University of California subject requirements. We seek to identify students
who have completed English, advanced mathematics, social science, foreign language and lab science courses during
their first two years of university level. To be considered competitive for admission, your grades and exam scores
must be excellent.
As soon as you have submitted your application, you should provide copies of secondary school records and university
records which show the subjects you have completed, total class hours, and grades (marks) earned. Send these
documents to each campus to which you apply, not to the application processing center. These documents may be unofficial
copies; if offered admission, you will need to follow up with official records. Upon evaluation of these records,
appropriate transfer credit may be warranted.

TOEFL / IELTS Examination
The TOEFL or IELTS examination is required of all students whose native language is not English. We waive the
TOEFL/IELTS requirement if a student meets one of the following conditions:
-
Attends a U.S. high school for at least three years, completes six semesters of approved English classes,
earns a grade of “C” or better in these courses, and attains Grade 12 proficiency in English.
-
Completes two transferable freshman English composition courses with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited
U.S. College or University. Some applicants assume they are exempt from taking an English proficiency exam because
many of their classes were conducted in English. This is not true. If your native language is other than English, you MUST
take either the TOEFL or IELTS Examination. If you choose to take the TOEFL Exam, you may take either the internet-based,
computer-based, or paper exam. We require a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based exam, 213 on the computer-based, or 550
on the paper. If you chose the IELTS Exam, a band score of 7 is required for admission consideration. To be considered for
admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment.
