If you have graduated from high school or secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at
any college or university, we consider you a freshman applicant.
|
International applicants must meet the University of California subject requirements. To be considered competitive
for admission, your grades and exam scores must be excellent.
|
If you are applying as a first-time freshman student from a country which has external examinations and these
examinations will not be taken until late spring, UCSB requires that you submit a statement from a tutor, principal,
headmaster, or another person in authority at your school who can predict how you will perform scholastically on the
final examinations.

As soon as you have submitted your application, you should also have documents sent which show your academic
achievement prior to the final year, i.e. equivalent to Grades 9-11 in the United States. Send these documents to each
campus to which you apply, not to the application processing center. These documents may be unofficial copies; if offered
admission, you will need to follow up with official records.

TOEFL / IELTS Examination
The TOEFL or IELTS examination is required of all students whose native language is not English. We waive
the TOEFL/IELTS requirement if a student meets one of the following conditions:
-
Attends a U.S. high school for at least three years, completes six semesters of
approved English classes, earns a grade of "C" or better in these courses, and
attains Grade 12 proficiency in English.
-
Completes two transferable freshman English composition courses with a grade of
"C" or better at an accredited U.S. College or University.
|
Some applicants assume they are exempt from taking an English proficiency exam because many of their classes were
conducted in English. This is not true. If your native language is other than English, you MUST take either the TOEFL
or IELTS Examination. If you choose to take the TOEFL Exam, you may take either the internet-based, computer-based, or
paper exam. We require a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based exam, 213 on the computer-based, or 550 on the paper.
If you chose the IELTS Exam, a band score of 7 is required for admission consideration. To be considered for admission,
the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment.
