International Freshman Applicants

If you have graduated from high school or secondary school and have not enrolled in a regular session at any college or university, we consider you a freshman applicant.

Academic Requirements

International applicants must meet the University of California subject requirements. To be considered competitive for admission, your grades and exam scores must be excellent.

Prediction of Performance Letter

If you are applying as a first-time freshman student from a country which has external examinations and these examinations will not be taken until late spring, UCSB requires that you submit a statement from a tutor, principal, headmaster, or another person in authority at your school who can predict how you will perform scholastically on the final examinations.

Examples of the examinations for which we would like to receive "predicted results" are:

British GCE "A" Levels Italian Maturita
Hong Kong Advanced Levels Israeli Bagrut
Swiss Federal Maturity Certificate German Abitur
Mexican and Latin American Bachillerato French Baccalaureate

As soon as you have submitted your application, you should also have documents sent which show your academic achievement prior to the final year, i.e. equivalent to Grades 9-11 in the United States. Send these documents to each campus to which you apply, not to the application processing center. These documents may be unofficial copies; if offered admission, you will need to follow up with official records.

Send all academic records directly to:

Office of Admissions

Required Exams

TOEFL / IELTS Examination

The TOEFL or IELTS examination is required of all students whose native language is not English. We waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement if a student meets one of the following conditions:

  • Attends a U.S. high school for at least three years, completes six semesters of approved English classes, earns a grade of "C" or better in these courses, and attains Grade 12 proficiency in English.

  • Completes two transferable freshman English composition courses with a grade of "C" or better at an accredited U.S. College or University.
  • Some applicants assume they are exempt from taking an English proficiency exam because many of their classes were conducted in English. This is not true. If your native language is other than English, you MUST take either the TOEFL or IELTS Examination. If you choose to take the TOEFL Exam, you may take either the internet-based, computer-based, or paper exam. We require a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based exam, 213 on the computer-based, or 550 on the paper. If you chose the IELTS Exam, a band score of 7 is required for admission consideration. To be considered for admission, the TOEFL or IELTS Exam must be taken by the December test date prior to enrollment.

Arrangements to take the test may be made by writing to:

    P.O. Box 6151
    Princeton, NJ 08541-6151 USA

    SAT or ACT

All students must submit the following test scores:
    • The SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment plus Writing.
The critical reading, writing and mathematics scores on the SAT must be from the same sitting. If you take the ACT, you must report your composite score.

    • Two SAT Subject Tests.
These must be in two different areas, chosen from the following: English literature, history and social studies, mathematics (Level 2 only), science or language other than English.

    Financial Concerns

We regret that the University of California does not have scholarships or employment opportunities available for new foreign undergraduate students. Please see http://www.oiss.ucsb.edu/Students/FinancialRequirements.aspx for estimated costs. Actual costs will vary and fees and expenses are subject to change.

Please mail any bank documents, personal certifications for support, and scholarship notices to the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) at UCSB. OISS will issue the visa documentation, which is necessary for you to obtain a student visa. To avoid delays in this process, supply OISS with all financial statements. Mail financial information to:
